THE CHALLENGE
There was a demand for new types of outings, but no one knew what specifically was desired.
THE SOLUTION
The obvious was needed, a consumer survey. After the survey was closed, the consensus was clear - people wanted to "learn" something rather than just "do" something.
THE RESULTS
After ensuring trips were profitable and desireable, I made a point to include a lesson plan for each trip. By including a skill or craft, there was a greater feeling of taking something home from the overall adventure..something a trip-goer could hone and practice on their own time. For example, a regular canoeing trip in Wales turned into canoeing, fire-making skills, and outdoor cookery. A regular surfing trip in Cornwall was elevated into surfing, yoga, and primitive craft skills (whittling and foraging the coast). Additionally, all trips included stops at castles and other notable historical landmarks to feed into the learning element. I also instituted "Environmental Day Paddles" with the intention of having fun paddling the river trails, providing a networking opportunity for paddlers, and most importantly, cleaning up the mess left by humans. Attendees left with a sense of pride in being stewards of the rivers, and with knowledge of "leave no trace" ethics to pass on to their friends and family.
